It’s Mnemonic Monday! | Metabolic Syndromes Associated with Trichorrhexis Nodosa

On this Mnemonic Monday, we challenge you to remember metabolic syndromes associated with trichorrhexis nodosa (TN) of the hair with the following mnemonic:

BLT Noodles

B=Brooms, (e.g. frayed hair fibers with the appearance of two broomsticks pushed together in trichorrhexis nodosa)

L=Low= helps remind you that this is associated with metabolic syndromes, with varying low or high levels of minerals/amino acids.

Example: low arginine and low copper in Menkes syndrome, low sulfur in trichothiodystrophy, high citrulline in citrullinemia, low arginine, high ammonia in argininosuccinic aciduria.

Check out the following JDD article on hair disorders including trichorrhexis nodosa:

Hair and Scalp Disorders in Ethnic Populations

ABSTRACT
Human hair has been classified into 3 major groups, as determined by ethnic origin. In these populations, significant structural and biochemical variations of the hair follicle and shaft are seen, as well as unique hair grooming practices. These structural variations of the hair are closely linked to the common disorders of the hair and scalp, such as acquired trichorrhexis nodosa, seborrheic dermatitis, traction alopecia, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, dissecting cellulitis, frontal fibrosing alopecia, and pseudofolliculitis barbae.
